2 basic pre-export steps for selling seafood to China from New Zealand

Since 2008, New Zealand has had strong ties selling seafood to China following the implementation of the China New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. But even though the FTA encourages seafood exports and has made the process of getting produce from New Zealand to China much simpler, there are still a few essential pre-export steps that need to be taken.

We’ve outlined below the two basic steps of paperwork New Zealand seafood suppliers need to complete before starting to sell their amazing seafood to Chinese buyers.

1. Certification of New Zealand origin

The General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (AQSIQ) requires that for any exports from New Zealand to make their way through customs, they need to be certified as having New Zealand origin.There are two bodies in New Zealand able to provide the necessary certification:

Both of these groups require that you make an application for the Certificate of Origin rather than distributing them freely. The applications are easy to complete and you can have a look at an application template here.

2. Organising air freight

If you don’t already have an established relationship with a freight-forwarder, get in touch with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) who will be able to provide you with everything you need to select an airline or freight-forwarder and get started exporting.
